Pilkington's Suspended

The project entitled Pilkington's Suspended was part of the Artist in Residence commissioned by Torfaen County Borough Council, in the second year of University, which enlisted each student to create work in Pontypool to highlight the conservation work in South Wales. The work was then exhibited throughout the town in an exhibition entitled reFrame.

 

My work focuses on the now shut down Pilkington Brothers' glasswork factory that was built in Pontypool in 1938. Built after World War I to improve employment, rehabilitate South Wales and boost the economy the factory would become the largest factory producing glass in Wales. The factory shut in 1975. When researching I came across an old pay slip which I decided to print onto glass to symbolise the fragility and struggle Pontypool's economy faced back then and in today's society.
